Fun drive on the Great River Road in Missouri! A NON-boring day!

NON-Boring Day 2!

Today started with the National Great Rivers Museum in Alton, IL. It’s in the St. Louis, MO, metro area. Here are a couple of pictures and a bit of info on each place.

National Great Rivers Museum

This museum, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, is located at Lock & Dam #27 in Alton, IL. If you get into the area, check it out. It packs a lot of information into a small space.

Ste. Genevieve National Historic Park

This park preserves historical buildings and artifacts from the early French settlers who founded the town in 1735. Some of the buildings offer scheduled tours, but the schedule didn’t work for me. The downtown area maintains many buildings like those in the French colonial days.

Next stop: Cape Girardeau

World’s Largest Fountain Cup

Some of you know that I like to visit odd, strange, quirky attractions. Here, I visited the World’s Largest Fountain Cup.

The Glenn House

The Glenn House wasn’t open for tours, but below is a picture from the street. If you can imagine it at night, it’s likely “spooky!”

Visit Us Again mural

On the riverfront, on the back side of the levee, there’s a mural that runs for several blocks, depicting town history. It’s a cool place to visit!

Delta Gateway Museum

I made it to Blytheville, AR, by the end of the day. I made it to this museum just before closing. It’s a local museum that shows the history of the town, its people, and its economy. I visited here in 2023 on a “paid” writing assignment. (Paid much less than my total cost for the trip! Some of us will do anything to have a reason for a road trip!)

National Cold War Center

With help from the state of Arkansas and some national groups, the National Cold War Center is being developed on an abandoned Air Force base on the outskirts of the city. The Ready Alert Facility, used by the Air Force when B-52s were here, will be restored as part of the museum, scheduled for 2027.

The larger museum with many Cold War artifacts and stories is currently planned to open in 2030.

On to see Johnny Cash’s boyhood home and on to Memphis, TN, next.

More tomorrow. (Or the next day.)

Note: These will be quick notes at the end of the day. I’ll send them “regularly.” Please excuse grammatical errors as I’m doing these on the fly!

Nestled along the banks of the Delaware River, Trenton, New Jersey, is a city where American history was quite literally forged. While many know it as the state capital, Trenton’s legacy stretches back to the nation's very birth. 🛶❄️ Most famously, Trenton was the site of George Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776. This bold move led to a pivotal victory in the Battle of Trenton, a turning point that breathed new life into the American Revolution. Today,...

If you’re in Seward, Alaska, on July 4th, don't expect a standard road race. If you are visiting Alaska for any reason, why not see this race? Whether you are here because it’s Alaska, or if you are on a 50-state quest, or you just love Alaska, check it out! The legendary Mount Marathon Race 🏔️is one of the oldest and most grueling traditions in the U.S., but there’s a catch: it isn’t actually a marathon! While a traditional marathon is 26.2 miles, this race is only 3.1 to 3.5 miles. However,...

Sorry, it went out on Sunday. By mistake! However, since you are a subscriber, I'm sure you know about visiting all 50 states? Of course, it's a common theme in here. One of my daughters just joined the All Fifty Club. She has 36 states ( you need 35 to join.) But you can sign up for the newsletter any time. Another daughter believes she has 35 or more but needs to count them and sign up also. My oldest daughter (I have three) believes she's at 34. I'm going to tell her that I'll help fund a...
