I’m going Where??? What for??

Why on earth would you go to Nebraska?

Well, I’ll be in Grand Island, Nebraska, for most of the week. I’m attending a travel writers and bloggers conference. It’s put on by the Midwest Travel Network, a group that promotes tourism in the 12 midwestern states.

Just hang on a minute, there’s much to see in each of our states. Personally, I’ve spent nearly a year in aggregate time in Nebraska. Granted, most of it was for work.

Which one would you say is the "Ultimate Flyover State?"

However, I’ve visited and written about various parts of the state. Here is one of the most scenic drives in the US, according to several experts. The Sand Hills Journey (link here) takes you on a trip through the Sand Hills of Nebraska. Rolling hills, rivers, lakes, etc. By the way, I drove through here in April and it hadn’t “greened up” much yet. Better to wait until later in May and into August.

Another option is Carhenge in Alliance, at the western end of the Sand Hills Journey. This one is a quirky replica of Stonehenge, made up of vintage cars painted gray to resemble stones. Here’s the link to Carhenge.

While you are in Alliance, take another trip north and west to see the Nebraska National Forest.

This post (link here) takes you from Kearney, NE, west toward Denver. You’ll find attractions in Kearney, North Platte, and Ogallala.

There’s more in Nebraska, like the Zoo in Omaha, the SAC Museum west of Omaha, the state capital in Lincoln, and the quirky Kool-Aid Museum in Hastings.

Nebraska, like every other state, has a lot going for it. The western part, especially the Panhandle, is much like eastern Wyoming and eastern Colorado.

I don’t have a picture in the post, but another stop is the Scotts Bluff National Monument (a national park service site) in the city of Scottsbluff.

When passing through the state on I-80, give some of these places a try! Nebraska is much more than corn, wheat, and feedlots!

“…On a pony she named Wildfire

A whirlwind by her side

On a cold Nebraska night…”

Travel and novels get you into American history. While driving Route 66, some of the museums you visit along the way display scenes that may represent The Grapes of Wrath. It’s about a family in Oklahoma who lose everything. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s yielded little to no crops. They lose their land. The family reads about “the land of plenty” in California. They, along with thousands of others, go west. The book details their struggles along the way with no money, deaths, auto breakdowns,...

Because it’s there! Sac City, IA, is home to the world’s largest popcorn ball. They made it to celebrate the history of popping corn grown in the area. Initially, their popcorn ball was removed from the record because the Indiana State Fair made one larger. Theirs was 6,510 pounds, eclipsing the Sac City former record of about 5,000 pounds. In 2016, Sac City residents decided to reclaim the record. Their efforts weighed 9,370 pounds and were twelve feet in diameter. The record still stands...
