Louisiana marks the end of the Great River road OR …

a switch in the direction of the road trip?

Today started in Vidalia, LA, where I spent the night. The first part of the trip took me back to Mississippi. My first planned stop wasn’t open! Lesson to Roadtrippers: Unless your trip is short, you’ll find this happening occasionally. Just be ready to pivot to the next thing or a substitute.

The Myrtles

This one’s also part of a plantation from back in the day. It now operates as a hotel, restaurant, coffee shop, tour site, and more. They also host a variety of events.

West Feliciana Historical Society and Museum

Another place is not open on Monday. ☹

Port Hudson State Historic Site

This state park commemorates the longest active siege in US history. It lasted one day longer than the siege of Vicksburg to the north. The park preserves some of the fort are from the Civil War.

Louisiana State Capitol

Of course, it’s under refurbishment! It was “one of those days” for me. That’s another lesson to remember. You might not see all of it. The highlight was the display at the location where Senator Huey P. Long was assassinated in 1935. Depending on whom you listen to, he’s either a folk hero or a dangerous demigod.

USS Kidd

Even though the ship is away for refurbishment, the museum was fun and interesting to visit. As a Navy Veteran myself, I doubly enjoyed the museum.

Plaquemine lock

Another one that wasn’t open!

Great River Road Museum

This museum is excellent! It tells the story of Louisiana and the area around the Great River Road. The museum is chock-full of wax figures, pictures, long posts about the displays, and more.

More tomorrow. (Or the next day.)

Note: These will be quick notes at the end of the day. I’ll send them “regularly.” Please excuse grammatical errors as I’m doing these on the fly!

Nestled along the banks of the Delaware River, Trenton, New Jersey, is a city where American history was quite literally forged. While many know it as the state capital, Trenton’s legacy stretches back to the nation's very birth. 🛶❄️ Most famously, Trenton was the site of George Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776. This bold move led to a pivotal victory in the Battle of Trenton, a turning point that breathed new life into the American Revolution. Today,...

If you’re in Seward, Alaska, on July 4th, don't expect a standard road race. If you are visiting Alaska for any reason, why not see this race? Whether you are here because it’s Alaska, or if you are on a 50-state quest, or you just love Alaska, check it out! The legendary Mount Marathon Race 🏔️is one of the oldest and most grueling traditions in the U.S., but there’s a catch: it isn’t actually a marathon! While a traditional marathon is 26.2 miles, this race is only 3.1 to 3.5 miles. However,...

Sorry, it went out on Sunday. By mistake! However, since you are a subscriber, I'm sure you know about visiting all 50 states? Of course, it's a common theme in here. One of my daughters just joined the All Fifty Club. She has 36 states ( you need 35 to join.) But you can sign up for the newsletter any time. Another daughter believes she has 35 or more but needs to count them and sign up also. My oldest daughter (I have three) believes she's at 34. I'm going to tell her that I'll help fund a...
