I attended the All Fifty States Club Annual Conference in Richmond, VA, this weekend. I met many “like-minded” people who love visiting all fifty states and sharing memories of their travels in the US. One of our speakers shared his experience of visiting all fifty states and reciting the Gettysburg Address in each one. Many who visited all fifty told us about their unique activities in each state. A common one is visiting all the state capitals. Some have visited every state three or four times. (I’ve only done it twice!) While in Virginia, I’m visiting National Park units. Before this writing, I’ve visited Petersburg National Battlefield, the Richmond National Battlefield Park, and the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. The Petersburg site preserves the story of a Civil War Battlefield. (By the way, is there such a thing as a “Civil” War?) The Richmond Site contains the history of battlefield hospitals during that war. The Maggie L. Smith celebrates the memory and accomplishments of the first black woman to own a bank. The house she owned and lived in was gifted to the NPS by her granddaughter, who became a doctor due to the influence of her “achieving” grandmother! Before returning home, I expect to visit more of the National Park Service sites in the area. As you can imagine, due to both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as the founding and maintenance of the nation, the area has a rich history. By the way, I won the award for reaching my 50th state the earliest among all attendees! New York in 1987. "Why Visit all Fifty? I saw Oak Alley Plantation north of New Orleans. Tomorrow, I'll be at the World War II museum, about a mile from my hotel. Oh, by the way. Here’s the link to the preview post about this trip. Oak Alley Plantation This one is one of many preserved antebellum plantations from the days of slavery. The tour guides tell the story of the families who lived here before and after the Civil War. The last owner lived until age 93. She had no children, and she set up a foundation to preserve and tell...
After some indecision on which attractions to visit today, I decided to see the south end of the Great River Road. So, let’s get on with it. Oh, by the way. Here’s the link to the preview post about this trip. South end of the Great River Road About 75 miles south of New Orleans lies Venice, the last town on Louisiana Highway 23. Although the road runs another five miles, it’s to service the oil field and fishing operations on the Gulf. There isn’t a sign that says “End of Great River Road”...
a switch in the direction of the road trip? Today started in Vidalia, LA, where I spent the night. The first part of the trip took me back to Mississippi. My first planned stop wasn’t open! Lesson to Roadtrippers: Unless your trip is short, you’ll find this happening occasionally. Just be ready to pivot to the next thing or a substitute. The Myrtles This one’s also part of a plantation from back in the day. It now operates as a hotel, restaurant, coffee shop, tour site, and more. They also...
