Have you driven a highway lonelier than this one?

Although US Highway 50 runs from Ocean City, MD, to Sacramento, CA, it’s officially known as the “Loneliest Road in America” in Nevada.

If you continue east into Utah, it’s much the same as the Nevada section. I recently drove 30 miles of the road in eastern Nevada and then drove much of the road in Utah.

I picked up the road where US 93 meets US 50 in Nevada and followed it to the Border Inn Casino and Motel in Baker, NV. After leaving Las Vegas, I made a stop at Great Basin National Park. Those miles had no services until I reached the Border Inn. And I spent the night in that motel. At least it was quiet!

The following day, I drove from there to Arches National Park in Utah.

Initially, US 50 in Utah had no services for the first 88 miles. During the first 80 miles, I met 22 vehicles and neither passed nor was passed by any cars or trucks!

My GPS took me away from US 50 for about 30 miles until I rejoined it at the point where the highway meets and runs concurrently with I-70.

On that stretch, there are 110 miles of no services from Salina, UT, to Green River, UT. That might be the loneliest stretch of the US Interstate system!

All the areas I drove through had incredible scenery! You must understand that this is the Great Basin Desert, so the vegetation is typical of deserts. There are also sections with very little vegetation.

However, I found myself wanting to stop regularly to take pictures of the rock formations and the mountains! I did include a few pictures here with my description of my drive.

"Sometimes the road less traveled, is less traveled for a reason!”

Classic Rock song: "That Lonesome Road” by James Taylor

Until next time.....

Featured Post: Here’s a post about another highway that has lonesome stretches. It’s Route 66 from Kingman, AZ, into California.

The longest road in the world is called the Pan-American Highway! The highway runs (unofficially) from Deadhorse, AK, to Ushuaia, Argentina. That’s from North America's northern-most drivable point to South America's southern-most drivable point! It’s about 19,000 miles and passes through 14 countries. I considered this when looking for a comparison for my 8,900-mile road trip, which I completed about ten days ago. The Pan-Am isn’t a specific road and isn’t officially recognized in the US and...
