A Special Road Trip Update!

I typically send one newsletter each week, but this road trip deserves a special update! I skipped my regular time yesterday to bring you one more day of summary. The last four days have packed in plenty of history, unusual stops, and memorable people. Day 4 was a big National Park Service day. I visited Harpers Ferry, Antietam, the C&O Canal, Catoctin Mountain Park, and Eisenhower National Historic Site. Day 5 brought a completely different mix. I explored Monocacy National Battlefield, saw the unusual Haines Shoe House, and toured James Buchanan’s Wheatland. Day 6 took me into Delaware and First State National Historical Park. Closed visitor centers caused some disappointment. However, an unexpected 45-minute conversation with Brent at the Wilmington Visitors Bureau became a highlight. Day 7 brought three more NPS units. Paterson Great Falls and Morristown were closed, but I could explore their grounds. Valley Forge was open, and conversations with Rangers Sean and Steve made the visit even better. And yes, there was some bumper-to-bumper I-95 traffic along the way! These are only the highlights. The latest Driveby Tourist adventure is officially underway! I left home on September 10 and pointed the car east. In typical Driveby Tourist fashion, a trip that starts with one main purpose has quickly become something much bigger. On September 10, I’ll hit the road for Philadelphia and the All Fifty Conference. The conference is the official reason for the trip.
